Adding and Dropping Spouse/Child Life Insurance
During the annual Benefit Choice period, the Benefit Choice Options booklet is available online for employees outlining any changes that will occur to the State of Illinois life insurance plan for the new plan year, July 1 through June 30. This may include changes to insurance carriers, premiums, or provisions. Changes take effect the following July 1.
During this period, employees may add and drop life insurance coverage on the optional State plan for their spouse and children.
Adding and dropping life insurance may be done online and requires completion of these steps:
- Select the link at the top of the Benefit Choice page.
- When adding a spouse or child, an online Statement of Health must also be completed either during the Benefit Choice period or no later than the 10th calendar day after the Benefit Choice period ends.
- Complete the online Beneficiary Election form when applying for the first time or when making a beneficiary change.
Dependent children who meet the eligibility requirements for health and dental insurance are eligible to apply for optional life insurance.
