Qualifying Event/State Plan Changes

Note: When adding a same-sex spouse, a paper Group Insurance Enrollment form must be submitted to your campus UPB Benefits Services office.

A qualifying event is a change in an employee's personal life that may impact their eligibility or dependent's eligibility for benefits. As defined in the IRS Irrevocability Rule, employees experiencing a qualifying event can change certain benefits for a specified time period.

When experiencing a qualifying event, employees have 60 days from the date of the event to submit a change in any State of Illinois plan. If the 60 days has passed, employees must wait until the next Benefit Choice period to make the change. Any changes made must be consistent with the qualifying event experienced.
