Divorce, Legal Separation, or Annulment
Employees who are getting divorced, legally separated or annulling their marriage should consider the following:
- Changes to benefits - the ex-spouse must be removed from all coverage effective the date of the event.
- Changes may need to be made to personal employment information.
- If your retirement benefits are being considered for possible division in divorce proceedings, please see the SURS web site for information on Qualified Illinois Domestic Relations Orders (QILDRO).
Changes to the following benefits must be submitted within 60 days of the event. The UPB Benefits Services office must have the following documents on file in order to process these changes: (1) a copy of page one of the divorce or legal separation decree, and (2) a copy of the divorce decree or legal separation page that includes the judge's signature.
