Part-time Employment State Insurance Election

Please read the following information carefully before proceeding with your State benefits enrollment.

  • The State of Illinois' basic term life insurance is automatically provided in an amount equal to your annual salary, at no cost. Please Note: Up to $50,000 of life insurance is tax exempt. If the total value of basic term life insurance plus any optional insurance purchased exceeds $50,000, then the amount in excess of $50,000 is taxed as imputed income.
  • You have 30 calendar days from your hire or benefit eligibility date to make your State health and dental coverage choices. Failure to waive or make your election on CMS MyBenefits will result in automatic enrollment in the Quality Care Health and Dental Plans with no dependent coverage and hundreds of dollars in insurance premium.
  • If you elect to participate, you must specify the type of coverage you are electing. You may elect health, dental and basic life; or basic life only.
  • If your spouse is a State employee, you may not be enrolled in the health, dental, vision and life plans as his/her dependent. A part-time employee may only be insured as a dependent on a State of Illinois spouse's coverage if the part-time employee waived all coverage as an employee, and has been continuously enrolled and employed as a part-time benefits-eligible employee, prior to July 1, 2003.
  • With the exception of conditions stated above for part-time employees, all existing contract provisions and conditions, including benefit eligibility criteria (i.e. enrollment of newborns, health certificate requirements), as provided for full-time employees are applicable to you.
  • If you elect not to participate, you will not be able to enroll in the program until the next Benefit Choice Period, which is typically in May with coverage effective July 1 of each year, unless you experience a qualifying event, such as a change in marital status, birth or adoption or a change in spouse's employment status.
